Enactus UOW test their entrepreneurial skills at national conference

A team of UOW students will test their entrepreneurial skills when they travel to Brisbane on 7 July to attend the 2014 Enactus National Conference which marks the culmination of the Enactus 2013/14 year.

The UOW team will compete against up to 28 other teams representing universities from all around Australia in a bid to take out the top prize, and with it a chance to compete in the Enactus World Cup.

Enactus is an international non-profit organisation that brings together student, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.

During the conference the team will present their entrepreneurial community-based projects to a panel of judges comprised of well-respected business leaders. These projects will be judged against strict criteria including that each project has positively affected people in need and improved their standard of living and quality of life. A strong emphasis will also be placed on empowerment of these individuals.

Enactus UOW will present three projects at the conference which they have been implementing and improving over the past 12 months. These projects include the Illawarra Youth DJ Program, Work Ready and Prepared (WRAP) and the Business Wizard project.

“The Enactus conference is a great opportunity for Enactus UOW student members to expand their horizons and see how their theoretical studies can be applied in a practical and life-changing manner,” according to Vice President of Marketing for Enactus UOW, James Watt.

“Not only will students be able to present their team’s projects, they will have the opportunity to learn from other presenting teams and network with business people, in addition to attending various workshops with the aim of improving how they can contribute to the Enactus UOW team and the local community,” James said.

At last year’s conference, Enactus UOW proceeded through to the semi-finals, placing them in the top eight teams in the nation. The team is hoping that its hard work and dedication will see members progress even further this year.

Through support from the Faculty of Business, 10 members from the Enactus UOW team have been selected to attend the conference which runs from 8-10 July.
