Local schools take up science and engineering challenge

Five hundred students from 15 local high schools will put their minds to the test when they compete in this year’s Illawarra and South East Region Science and Engineering Challenge, held over two days from tomorrow (Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 July) at the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ (UOW). 

Years 9 and 10 students will be take part in activities including constructing a small hovercraft from motorized propulsion units, building an Eco-Habitech model home, and creating a tall earthquake-proof tower using only basic materials, sound engineering principles, and ingenuity.

UOW organiser, Julie Curcio, said all activities were designed to show students the practical side of careers in science and engineering. 

“The challenge is supported by local volunteers who help to make it a fun event,” she said. “It aims to give the participating students a more realistic view of what a career in technology would involve.”

Dr Terry Burns, Director of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of Newcastle’s Science and Engineering Challenge, said: “We need to inspire young people and show them that creativity is an integral part of any career in science and engineering. Scientists and engineers investigate and solve problems and, whilst theory is a vital part of this work, it is just as important to be innovative and creative.”

The Illawarra and South East Region Challenge is supported by the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of Newcastle, the Rotary Club of ¾«¶«´«Ã½, the Department of Education and Training and Engineers Australia and the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences at UOW.

The challenge starts at 9.30am and concludes at about 2.30pm with the testing of the student-built bridges.
