Primary school students to ‘taste’ university life across UOW’s regional campuses

Primary school students to ‘taste’ university life across UOW’s regional campuses

More than 2,000 Year 5 and 6 students and their parents will visit the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½’s campuses in ¾«¶«´«Ã½, Shoalhaven, Batemans Bay, Bega and the Southern Highlands over the next month to explore their future career options after they finish school.

The Kids In2Uni Program is part of UOW’s Strategic Plan to foster partnerships across its region and is a commitment to increase the opportunities for individuals from its local communities.

Now in its fifth year, the Kids In2Uni Program is designed to provide students, their parents and their teachers with a positive connection with the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ and to ‘taste’ university life.

In the lead up to the event, primary school teachers have delivered a unit of work in their classrooms about making career decisions and the students have had visits by current university students who previously attended their local school.

While on campus, students will have the opportunity to participate in ‘Taster Sessions’ run by UOW academics, learn about the social side of university life and generally explore the campuses. Parents will also have the opportunity to speak with university staff about career planning, financial assistance and support for their children in accessing university.

Outreach & Pathways Manager, Kylie Austin said: “By starting to work with students early in their schooling and planting the seed that university is an option, we are increasing the opportunities for these students.

"The In2Uni Program will continue to work with this group of students through high school in the form of mentoring and pathways programs to ensure that students are successful in achieving their post school career options.”
