Stephen Jones guest speaker for UOW Southern Highlands graduation celebration

A graduation celebration will be held for graduands of the Southern Highlands campus of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ on Friday 12 December.

The celebration will be a precursor to the official graduation ceremonies being held on the main campus of the university next week from 15-19 December.

Official guests this Friday will include the Federal Labor Member for Throsby and Shadow Assistant Minister for Health, Mr Stephen Jones and the Mayor of Wingecarribee Shire Council, Cr Duncan Gair.

Manager of UOW’s Southern Highlands Campus, Sonia Sense, said the Occasional Address at this year’s celebration ceremony would be presented by Mr Jones. An official welcome to guests will be made by the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½’s Executive Director of Early Start and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Inclusion and Outreach), Professor Paul Chandler.

Ms Sense said that many students would not have had the opportunity to undertake studies had it not been for the existence of the Southern Highlands campus as it was too difficult for potential students to get to ¾«¶«´«Ã½ due to economic or family reasons.

She said the campus attracted a range of students including one of this year’s graduands, Jessica-Anne MacDonald who will be receiving a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction degree.

Jessica-Anne, a single mother, wanted to show her three daughters that anything is possible as she took on her studies.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of support and genuine interest in helping students success at the local campus. I really value my education now more than ever,” she said.

Students at the Southern Highlands campus will be celebrating the completion of their studies for either a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration or Bachelor of Commerce degree. The Southern Highlands campus located in Moss Vale was established by the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ in 2002. Since the first graduation ceremony in 2005, more than 120 students have graduated with a UOW degree.
