Graduates honoured at July celebrations

The next generation of leaders in engineering, information technology, and business will celebrate their graduation at UOW this week.

Close to 1000 students will be recognised in three ceremonies held over two days, on Thursday, July 21 and Friday, July 22.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences and the Faculty of Business will celebrate their academic and research achievements.

Brenden Butters, who has graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) – Dean’s Scholar, and a Bachelor of Mathematics (Advanced), which he studied concurrently, will be among the graduands to be recognised in the two-day event.

Brenden earned a 2016 ¾«¶«´«Ã½ Medal after achieving a High Distinction in every subject and will be guest speaker at Thursday’s Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences celebration.

Following his undergraduate studies, the 22-year-old will undertake a PhD at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the top-ranked electrical engineering school in the world.

The ¾«¶«´«Ã½ Medal is awarded annually to students with an outstanding academic record.

Retired academic and business executive Professor John Glynn will deliver the Occasional Address during Thursday’s Faculty of Business graduation celebration.

As Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business and Sydney Business School, ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½, for 19 years before his retirement in December, Professor Glynn will be honoured with an Emeritus Professorship in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the UOW community.

From new techniques in cancer treatment to developing landscape susceptibility of models, the research achievements of 45 PhD candidates will be celebrated during the July event.

Among the notable research graduands is Dr Jeremy Davis, whose thesis focused on developing and characterising a method for measuring radiation doses in astronauts.

It is the sixth academic undertaking completed by Dr Davis at UOW; he has previously studied a Bachelor of Science; Bachelor of Arts; Bachelor of Science Honours (Physics); Graduate Diploma in Education; and Graduate Certificate in Research Commercialisation.

Since its foundation, UOW has awarded more than 139,000 degrees and diplomas.
