Annual awards celebrate students’ contribution to campus life
UniLife and Sports Awards recognise non-academic activities in sport, clubs
UOW Pulse celebrated the extracurricular activities of students at the annual ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ UniLife and Sports Awards last Friday (19 October).
The UniLife awards recognise the contributions of clubs and volunteers in creating a positive and dynamic university campus experience.
“The awards provide the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of students representing the university outside of the classroom be it on the sports field or in a student club,” said Monica Millar, Head of Marketing and Communications at UOW Pulse.
“We also thank and acknowledge the efforts of students who volunteer their time to support events and programs. Their contribution to creating an enriching university experience for their peers is invaluable.”
The annual Sports Awards acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of UOW Sports Clubs, sports teams and student athletes.
This year, the prestigious Sports Person of the Year honour was awarded to former Illawarra Hawk and UOW student Nicholas Kay.
UOW Hockey Club received the Club of the Year award and Sally Johnston was named Club Person of the Year, among a number of sports accolades presented during the event.
The awards recognised the tremendous contributions that volunteers make to university life.
The 2018 Volunteer of the Year, Kate Nyhan, has volunteered more than 85 hours this year to UOW UniLife events and programs as well as community programs, including the Cancer Council Illawarra and AIME Mentoring. Kate has also helped at events such as O Week, Stress Less Week and Live Art Week as well as numerous gigs at UniBar.

UOW Red Cross Club was named the winner of the Campus Engagement Award. The club was recognised for the wide variety of events it has organised on campus this year, from BBQs for blood donors, food donation drives, and welcome cards for refugees. It has given students the opportunity to drive social change on campus.
