Awards recognise exceptional Malaysians who went to uni in Australia
A ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ (UOW) alumnus has been recognised among the most prolific Australian Alumni who are working in Malaysia.
UOW Engineering graduate Noor Ilias Mohd Idris was named as a finalist in the Distinguished Alumni Award category in the 2019 Malaysian Australian Alumni Awards.
Winners of five categories were announced in Kuala Lumpur on Friday night at an awards ceremony.
The awards recognise exceptional Malaysians who graduated from Australian universities and have made significant contributions in various fields and to society over many years. They also recognise the important role alumni play in strengthening the Australian-Malaysian relationship.
Unfortunately Mr Mohd Idris missed out on the top gong, but he was honoured to be a finalist.
He works for Petronas as the Vice President of Group Project Delivery.
Established in 1974, Petronas is Malaysia’s fully integrated oil and gas company and is ranked among the largest corporations on FORTUNE Global 500, operating in more than 20 countries.
As custodian of Malaysia’s national oil and gas resources, Petronas explores, produces and delivers energy to meet the country’s growing needs.
There are many instances where Mr Mohd Idris has demonstrated business acumen while balancing compassion in making a significant impact to the local community. As an advisor for a community education project in remote villages, he personally steered and drove the completion of Daily Hostels at the local school. The children are no longer required to commute daily with rough sea conditions and dangerous hilly roads. He is also heading up the construction of two colleges in order to bring education and a bright future to the underprivileged children.
He has played a significant role in shaping the direction of project management and delivery in Malaysia. Mr Mohd Idris has been supportive of the corporate sustainability agenda. He has been involved in the installation of solar systems at Petronas to complement electricity usage and to reduce greenhouse gas and their carbon footprint.
During his student days at UOW, Mr Mohd Idris was proudly Vice President of the Malaysian Student Association, which was the biggest of any overseas student association at the time.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) in 1990.
