¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ Chancellor Christine McLoughlin AM to step down
Chancellor McLoughlin AM will step down from the role later this year
¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ (UOW) Chancellor Ms Christine McLoughlin AM today advised the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ Council that she will be stepping down from her role later this year.
“My appointment as Chancellor was announced in April 2020, which we now know marked the start of a period of global turbulence that no one could have foreshadowed. To be the Chancellor of UOW as we worked our way through the challenges posed by the global pandemic has been a privilege," Ms McLoughlin said.
“After three years of addressing significant changes and opportunities, I am proud that we at UOW now have robust plans in place for our future. Additionally, we are continuing to reinvigorate our campuses for our students and world-leading academics to be prepared for further implications that may flow through the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ sector following the completion of the Australian Universities Accord later in the year.”
“All organisations are operating in an increasingly complex environment. This has meant over the past 12 months it has been increasingly challenging to balance the extensive responsibilities of Chancellor with my other professional business and not-for-profit responsibilities.”
“My other roles equally require a high level of stakeholder and government interaction, which I don’t see abating in the future.”
“As such, it is with great sadness, that I have made the very difficult decision to step down as Chancellor later this year. I assure you I will work hard to ensure an orderly transition.”
“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be Chancellor at UOW and will continue to wish only the best for the ongoing success of our ¾«¶«´«Ã½.”
Deputy Chancellor Robert Ryan, the longest standing member of Council will Chair a Council Sub-Committee to run a process to find a new Chancellor for UOW. The Committee will engage a professional recruitment firm to guide a comprehensive search. Approval of the new Chancellor will be sought from Council once the process is complete.
UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Patricia M. Davidson said Ms McLoughlin has been a trusted leader since being appointed to the role in 2020.
“Throughout what has been an incredibly challenging time for the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ sector, Ms McLoughlin has been a trusted and respected Chancellor, helping UOW navigate turbulent economic and social challenges,” Professor Davidson said.
“The recently released interim report of the Universities Accord highlights the importance of the role of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ Council, and Ms McLoughlin has fulfilled her role as Chancellor with tireless dedication and distinction.
“I will be working closely with Ms McLoughlin to ensure a smooth transition, which will include working with the Committee led by Deputy Chancellor Robert Ryan in the process to appoint UOW’s fifth Chancellor.”
