Former La Trobe Vice-Chancellor brings exceptional experience, in-depth knowledge of higher education

The ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½ (UOW) has appointed former La Trobe university Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO as its Interim Vice-Chancellor and President.

UOW Chancellor Mr Michael Still said Professor Dewar is an exceptional leader who brings extensive experience and knowledge to the role, having served 12 years as Vice-Chancellor at La Trobe ¾«¶«´«Ã½.

“I am very pleased to announce that Professor Dewar has accepted the position of Interim Vice-Chancellor and President at the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½,” Mr Still said.

“As one of Australia’s longest serving Vice-Chancellors he brings a wealth of experience and an in-depth understanding of the challenges facing the tertiary education sector having overseen a decade of significant achievements at La Trobe ¾«¶«´«Ã½.”

“UOW is a tremendous university, has tremendous history, research background as well as excellent teaching, and Professor Dewar will ensure our staff and students remain focused on their pursuit of excellence.”

Professor Dewar said he was looking forward to working with UOW’s staff, students and community to find the opportunities in the challenges facing the higher education sector.

“I am excited by the opportunity to join UOW. There are some challenges ahead but also some exciting opportunities,” Professor Dewar said. 

“The pandemic tested our community’s resilience. The impact of the Australian government’s migration strategy is set to test our resilience once more.

“However, these changes also offer us an opportunity to sharpen our focus and to think strategically and innovatively about our work and our future.

“What is certain is that UOW will continue to help students uncover their passions, equip researchers to deliver real-world impact and contribute meaningfully to our local and global communities.”

Under Professor Dewar’s leadership La Trobe ¾«¶«´«Ã½ continuously improved its standing in the major international university rankings, increased research income by 149 per cent, established new partnerships with industry, business and cultural bodies.

Prior to serving as La Trobe ¾«¶«´«Ã½ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dewar was both Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Relations) at the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of Melbourne. He has also served as Chair of Universities Australia and held several senior law academic positions in Australia and the UK. Professor Dewar is currently a partner at advisory and investment firm KordaMentha,

Professor Dewar will commence as Interim Vice-Chancellor at UOW on Monday 24 June. He will serve in the position while the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ conducts a recruitment process for a long-term Vice-Chancellor and President, which is expected to take until the end of the year.
