Students network with employers and boost employability skills at annual UOW Graduate Careers Expo

More than 950 students attended the annual UOW Graduate Careers Expo today (Tuesday 11 March) at ¾«¶«´«Ã½ Campus looking to kick start their future careers.

UOW students had the opportunity to connect and network with leading employers at the annual event that brought together students across all disciplines and major employers from across Australia and internationally, including Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, Office of National Security, Deloitte, KPMG, Macquarie Technology Operations, Department of Defence, Komatsu, GM3, Teach NSW and CEA Technologies.

Last year more than 1,200 students met exhibitors to discuss career opportunities. This year 64 exhibitors participated with several employer presentations held throughout the day.

UOW Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic and Student Life) Senior Professor Sue Bennett said undergraduate and postgraduate students had the opportunity to network with top recruiters at the expo and discuss potential career options, internships, graduate recruitment opportunities and learn about vacation programs.

“UOW’s flagship Graduate Careers Expo enables students to make important connections with potential employers and discover career opportunities beyond their studies,” Senior Professor Bennett said.

“To meet industry leaders across all sectors including finance, consulting, government, healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, mining, education, law and technology in the one spot ensures that there is something for everyone.”

“UOW graduates are consistently ranked among the top one percent in the world by employers. We pride ourselves on preparing graduates for emerging industries and future jobs, with the skills needed to take their careers to the next level to make a positive contribution to their communities.”

The Graduate Careers Expo is open to all students and is particularly valuable for those in their penultimate or final year of study.

As part of the expo, the Uni Hall Foyer was transformed into the International Student Skills Zone with several volunteer organisations exhibiting to help students build local experience, contacts, and references. Sessions ran throughout the day to help students to build the skills needed to gain employment in the Australian job market.

To make the most of the expo, students were encouraged to prepare conversation starters to help hone their networking skills when talking to exhibitors and make the best first impression.

Presentations covered the essential tools and tips for job applications, along with insights into ways to project manage a career.

Careers staff were available to assist students with their resumes and ensure it was ready for graduate program applications.

A photographer was available to take professional headshots of students during the expo, so soon-to-be graduates can update their LinkedIn profiles.

More information about the Graduate Careers Expo (including the list of exhibitors) is available on the website.
