High school students get a taste of university life
From science and law to the arts and technology, students can explore their interests and experience campus life at UOW Discovery Days
More than 6,500 high school students from across NSW, ACT and Victoria will get a taste of university life during the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½'s (UOW) annual Discovery Days, taking place from Monday 17 to Friday 21 February 2025.
The five-day event will welcome Year 12 students UOW's ¾«¶«´«Ã½ campus, where they'll experience authentic university life through a series of engaging academic sessions and activities.
UOW Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic and Student Life) Senior Professor Sue Bennett said Discovery Days plays an important role in helping students make informed decisions about their future.
"Discovery Days gives Year 12 students the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in university life and experience firsthand what it means to be a UOW student," Professor Bennett said.
"Students receive their own personalised timetables and can explore the subjects that genuinely interest them, from law and business to engineering and information technology, from science, medicine, nursing and health to the arts, social sciences and humanities."
The program features diverse and thought-provoking sessions across all faculties.
Students can participate in sessions such as “How to fall in love, survive at work, and predict the future”, “Law: You be the judge”, “How finance makes the world go round” and “First Nations knowledges in the 21st century”.
The Sciences and Health streams offer engaging topics like “From pimples to pandemics: discovering the science of the human body” and “Managing infectious diseases: a mathematical response”.
"What makes Discovery Days special is that it goes beyond traditional open days. Students attend university-style lectures, navigate our campus between classes, and experience the social aspects of university life during their lunch breaks with live music and other activities," Professor Bennett said.
The event attracts students from hundreds of high schools, including from the South Coast Central West, South West Sydney, Goulburn, Southern Highlands, Canberra and regional Victoria, as well as from the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Sutherland Shire.
"We're proud to showcase our world-class facilities and beautiful campus to the next generation of university students," Professor Bennett said.
"Discovery Days is about helping students envision their future and showing them how UOW can support them in achieving their academic and career aspirations."
