UOW expert to speak at national summit on digital health
Professor Stacy Carter to discuss challenges and opportunities posed by artificial intelligence on healthcare delivery
The ¾«¶«´«Ã½ of ¾«¶«´«Ã½’s (UOW) will join leading experts tomorrow (Tuesday 18 February) at the where she will discuss public views on the risks, challenges, and opportunities presented by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health services.
Professor Carter, Director of the Australian Centre for Health Engagement, Evidence and Values (ACHEEV) at UOW, is an expert in applied ethics and social research methods in healthcare. Her research also explores the ethical use of AI in healthcare and the importance of understanding community attitudes towards its application.
Professor Carter’s insights will contribute to a panel discussing the potential and pitfalls of generative AI with Dr Sharon Hakkennes, the Chief Digital Health Officer of Victoria, and Professor Jean-Frédéric Levesque, Deputy Secretary, Clinical Innovation and Research at the NSW Ministry of Health. The Summit Is designed to help shape discussions on how Australia can embrace AI innovations in healthcare while addressing potential concerns.
“The rapid rise of generative AI shows promise for healthcare applications, but it also demands careful consideration of risks and ethical challenges,” said Professor Carter.
“The summit provides a vital platform for us to collaborate and ensure these technologies are used in ways that genuinely benefit individuals and communities.”

It will bring together leading innovators, service providers, expert clinicians and consumers for a day of panel discussions, case study presentations and Q&A sessions. The online event will see presenters from Australia and around the world focus on building strong and effective clinical governance in the digital health space.
Researchers at ACHEEV are at the forefront of research on the ethical, legal and social implications of using AI in health services. Using innovative social and deliberative research methods, and ethics and social science analysis, ACHEEV generates new frameworks and recommendations that reflect what matters to patients and communities, to inform the use of data, AI and other technologies.
