Nurturing potential: Isabel’s journey

Nurturing potential: Isabel’s journey

Isabel Abbott’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education.

A leap of faith

At just 18, Isabel made the bold decision to move interstate to pursue her education. “Relocating to a different state three months after turning 18 to enhance my education is definitely a more recent achievement that I still cannot believe is real,” Isabel recalls. Her determination to seek knowledge and personal growth led her to UOW, where she is now thriving.

The moment of realisation

Isabel’s passion for learning and helping others has been a driving force in her life. An Aboriginal woman herself, it was her interest in Indigenous Australia and her fascination with healthcare that guided her to choose a . “Helping people from all walks of life is what I believe to be my true purpose.  I aspire to be an individual who is a safe space for all”, she explains. Her degree not only satisfies her thirst for knowledge but has also opened numerous career opportunities.

She is now feeling excited about the future that lies before her and vividly remembers the moment she found out that this future could be possible. “Finding out I was a successful applicant for the scholarship was quite literally a life-changing moment. It meant I was able to move to NSW to pursue my studies,” she shares. Without this support, Isabel’s dream of studying at UOW would have remained just that - a dream.

A message for donors, beyond the classroom

Outside her studies Isabel is still finding her feet in a new city, often spending time sightseeing or going to the beach, something she described as “the biggest luxury!” Despite her busy schedule, she always makes time for her studies, ensuring she keeps a good average. Additionally, Isabel finds joy in getting lost in her extensive collection of books.

Isabel’s story is a testament to the importance of scholarships in transforming lives. “The generosity of donors allows students such as myself with financial struggles to be at ease surrounding their funding for university,” she says. “All of the contributions made not only facilitate access to education but also pave the way for transformative experiences and opportunities while in university. My gratitude cannot be expressed in words, but instead, I vow to engage in my studies as well as experience my new life in ¾«¶«´«Ã½.”

Looking ahead

Isabel’s aspirations do not stop at her current degree. She plans to pursue a Master of Indigenous Healthcare and then a Doctor of Medicine through the Australian Army. Her ultimate dream is to become a trauma doctor in the Australian Army, though she is also considering a future as a rural General Practitioner.
